October 27, 2020 ~ Shift Network Summit

William participated in an online summit with Shift Network. The presentation introduced the shared death experience and outlined its features and profound benefits. Included in this presentation were case examples from over 200 research participants and steps that can be taken by loved ones to enable the occurrence of these profound and healing shared death experiences.

August 15, 2020 ~ International Association for Near-Death Studies

The International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS) hosted their first virtual conference August 14-16. William Peters moderated a panel titled Healing Perspectives on Dying Alone and gave a presentation with chief researcher Dr. Michael Kinsella called The Shared Death Experience: What the leading-edge research tells us. This presentation drew upon 200 shared-death experience (SDE) accounts to outline the three major types of SDEs and their sets of core features.

June 18, 2020 ~ Helping Parents Heal

William gave a live Zoom presentation titled How Shared Crossings Affirm Communication
Across the Veil 
and participated in a Q&A session with the Helping Parents Heal community. This presentation outlined case studies that suggest that veil between this human life and 
what lies beyond is more permeable than some might think.

November 15 - 16, 2019 ~ American Center for the Integration of Spiritually Transformative Experiences

​William Peters and Monica Williams, MD joined forces to discuss the Spectrum of End-of-Life Experiences (SELE) ​and the typologies that it outlines. This presentation introduced the Spectrum of Spiritually Transformative Experiences at end of life which encompasses pre-death premonitions and pre- and post-death dreams, visions, and synchronicities, and shared death experiences



November 14, 2019 ~ Presentation to Hospice of Santa Barbara Volunteers
William and Michael game a presentation titled The Best Death Possible... and How to Manifest One to the volunteers at Hospice of Santa Barbara. The presentation reviewed the best death scenarios and challenges the notion that advanced care directives and conversations with loved ones are sufficient preparation for achieving the best death possible.

Sarah House Santa Barbara hosted a Shared Crossing Community event where William Peters presented explorations of conscious, connected, and loving end-of-life experiences.


April 5-8, 2019 ~ Continuum of Consciousness 

William Peters presented at the Sivananda Ashram in The Bahamas with Dr. Eben Alexander, Karen Newell, and Paul Aurand. Each presenter discussed the various profound spiritual experiences that occur at the borders of life and death.

March 16, 2019 ~ American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine

William Peters and Shared Crossing Research Initiative's (SCRI) Medical Advisor, Monica Williams, MD presented at the AAHPM National Conference in Orlando, FL. This was the first time that William and Monica presented SCRI's groundbreaking research on Pre-death Dreams and Visions to AAHPM, at what is perhaps the largest gathering of end-of-life healthcare providers.

November 14, 2018 ~ Making Lemonade from Lemons: The paradox of living fully in the face of a life-limiting or terminal diagnosis
This gathering with Dr. Mitch Metzner considered the ways in which we can make meaning in the face of inevitable aging, decline, and death. Dr. Metzner gave a 1 hour presentation and engaged with his audience after for a Q&A. Local sponsor organizations were introduced and each organization shared how their agencies support the community on issues related to death and dying.


October 24, 2018 ~ Shared Crossing Community Gathering
At this meeting William shared recent exciting findings with the Shared Crossing Research Initiative. He showed video accounts of shared crossing experiences. There was also a presentation by two sisters who recounted their moving experiences around the death of their father.

October 5, 2018 ~ The Shared Death Experience: Profound Healing and Transformation for the Dying and their Loved Ones
This presentation will reviewed the essential elements of the SDE, its transformative healing benefits, and methods that support experiencers through their process of integration.  Highlighting the Shared Crossing Research Initiative’s work with over 200 case studies, this presentation reviewed current understandings of how SDEs occur and their potential for therapeutic growth. This presentation included a review of the research, video case studies, a guided visualization, and discussion.

September 15, 2018 ~ Shared Crossings: Glimpses of the Afterlife 
​William presented on shared crossings; extraordinary end-of-life experiences that assert meaningful communication across the veil. This presentation introduced the Shared Crossing Spectrum that features pre-death premonitions, pre- and post-death dreams/visitations, post-death synchronicities and coincidences, direct post-death communication, and the shared death experience.

 September 2, 2018 ~ Engaging the Morphic Field in the Dying Process
William Peters and Dr. Monica Williams joinied forces this year at the IANDS (International Association for Near-Death Studies) Conference in Bellevue, Washington.  In this presentation they led an exploration into the morphic field of death and the gifts that are available at this stage of life.  

​March 15, 2018 ~ The Gifts of Dying Consciously 
In this lively experiential workshop Dr. Williams examined the under-appreciated and misunderstood gifts that naturally arise during the twilight time of death and dying. Attendees learned practices and methods to engage the dying, access and comprehend their reality, and support their profound end-of-life experience. As a medical insider, Dr. Williams offered a unique, thoughtful, and compelling assessment of our modern heathcare system

This was a 3-hour program that took place at McDermott-Crockett Mortuary.

February 19, 2018 ~ Extraordinary End-of-life Experiences: What every caregiver needs to know when attending to the dying 
In this workshop, William reviewed the current research and understanding of ELE's or "shared crossings," provided a user-friendly map for these end-of-life phenomena, and offered practical skills to support patients and their loved ones during these experiences. This presentation featured video case studies, a guided visualization, and lively discussion.

This program was a presentation to VNHC Hospice Volunteers.

February 21, 2018 ~ Aging as Nature, Dying as Grace: Vitality through later life and beyond
Jeanne Denney is a somatic psychotherapist, hospice worker, and educator who works to help people embrace a life which includes death.  In her didactic and experiential 3-hour workshop, Jeanne Denney explored aging and dying as physical, emotional, energetic, and spiritual processes.  Fears were explored and the idea that life and death are opposites was challenged.

This 3-hour program program took place at McDermott-Crockett Mortuary. 


November 2017 ~ Doing Death Differently: Exploring Extraordinary End-of-Life Experiences
William Peters, Director of the Shared Crossing Project, and Stephen Jones, Community Education Program Coordinator at Hospice Santa Barbara, led an interactive exploration of conscious, connected, and loving end-of-life experiences.  Participants examined the Shared Crossing Spectrum© of experiences in a lively discussion format, including: Pre-death premonitions, Pre-death dreams/visions, Terminal lucidity, Deathbed coincidences, Shared death experience, Direct post-death communications, Post-death dreams/visions and Post-death synchronicities.

November 6, 2017 ~ When is it OK to Die?
Dr. Monica Williams-Murphy is one of the most well known and vocal advocates of Hospice care and quality at the end of life.  She has traveled the nation boldly posing the following questions:
  • With our modern health care system's over-emphasis on prolongation of human life, how can you gain conscious control of your life's final chapter?  What are our opportunities for growth at life's end?  Is there a time when it is OK to die?

Dr. Williams-Murphy presented a 3-hour interactive workshop in conjunction with William Peters at the lovely McDermott-Crockett Mortuary.

SDE’s and Shared Crossings: The Extraordinary Gift in Death’s Doorway​ 
Through a mix of lecture, guided visualizations, intentional practices and discussions, William taught the essential elements of the SDE, its profound healing and consciousness-enhancing benefits, and the leading edge methods that facilitate it. He defined SDE’s and Shared Crossing Experiences and placed them in the context of other end-of-life or Near Death Experiences.

June 1, 2017 ~ The 7th Annual Afterlife Awareness Conference, Portland, OR
The Shared Death Experience: Healing Across the Veil

William facilitated an afternoon workshop, including the research, video case studies, guided visualizations, simulations, group work and discussion. Professionals and lay people alike gained an understanding of "shared crossings" that will allow them to recognize these transformative experiences and assist others in receiving and processing them. Special attention regarding how the SDE reduces grief for surviving caregivers and loved ones was addressed.

May 19, 2017 ~ Extraordinary End of Life Experiences: A Thoughtful Examination with William Peters
William spoke and facilitated a discussion at Hospice Santa Barbara's "Learn at Lunch" series. Most of us who work in end-of-life have heard of or been present to extraordinary end of life experiences (ELE's). How do we work with our patients and with ourselves when these experiences occur?  William reviewed the current research and understanding of ELE's or shared crossings, and provided participants with a user-friendly map of this end-of-life landscape.

Linguist Lisa Smartt presented the Final Words Project and introduced her new book to the general public (after she facilitated an afternoon workshop for the Shared Crossing Project).  

​This was a wonderful 
community collaboration between the Shared Crossing Project, Hospice Santa Barbara, and the Alliance for Living and Dying Well.

April 19, 2017 ~ Alchemical Language:
The Language of the Threshold and of Transformation

LINGUIST Lisa Smartt has been researching the themes and patterns of people’s last words for over four years. In this inspiring workshop, she explored how the language of the dying points the way to a transcendent world beyond our own, and she offered practical guidance for more meaningful communication with loved ones who are at the end of life.  Lisa also introduced and signed copies of her newly published book, "Words at the Threshold"!

Our semi-annual Alumni Gathering offered us a wonderful opportunity to gather and connect.  
 
One of the main themes of this gathering was to explore the Shared Crossing Research Initiative's stunning new finding that we're calling "Direct Post-Death Communication."  Two of the presenters shared their experiences which illuminated this awe-inspiring finding.

The premiere educational, interdisciplinary meeting for professionals working in the field of death, dying and bereavement: mental health professionals, social workers, counselors, educators, clergy, funeral directors, hospital and hospice personnel, and psychologists.

As founder of Altruism in Medicine Institute (AIMI), Dr. Kerzin, physician to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, teacher, author and fully ordained Buddhist monk, addressed one of life’s most fundamental challenges--Being Fully Awake in Life and Death.  He shared basic techniques to increase awareness, enhance life experience and learn to be fully present in each moment.

How to Heal from the Death of a Loved One


William Peters was the facilitator of Dr. James Kwako's monthly meeting with health professionals on Friday, May 6, 2016. ​This free presentation examined our relationship to one of life’s greatest mysteries: Human Death. Joined by a client who lost her husband tragically in an accident four years ago, William addressed topics like how our beliefs about death influence the ability to grieve and heal, clinical approaches to treat complex grief, and the benefits for preparing for dying in healthy ways.

Yoga, Meditation & The Great Awakening


William Peters and Suzanne Marlow held 3 workshops that focused on the sensitive and culturally taboo ideas of aging, sickness and dying- what in Buddhism is known as the Divine Messengers. Through yoga, meditation, and the spiritual practices of inquiry they aimed to awaken the body, mind and soul in a wise and heart felt manner.

He spoke about how to ensure that we receive the best care possible when we need it most. Using stories and reflections drawn from over three decades of practice, Dr. Byock explored often untapped opportunities for individuals and families for living fully, meaningfully – even joyfully – through these difficult times of life.

Near and Shared Death Experiences: First-Hand Accounts, Causes & Effects I Consciousness Series- 
Building on previous Consciousness Series presentations about both Near Death Experiences (NDEs) and Shared Death Experiences (SDEs), William Peters, Eben Alexander and others engaged in a panel discussion that dove deeper into the subject by taking a closer look at the causes as well as the after-effects felt by those who have experienced these phenomenon.  The next day, William held a 3-hour workshop called The Shared Death Experience: Profound Evidence of the Afterlife.

January 31st, 2015-
"Lessons on a Life Worth Living"

On Sunday, January 31st from 10am to 12pm, William Peters gave a sermon at the Live Oak Unitarian Church
 during the morning service.  William spoke on the challenges of being human and how one finds meaning in the midst of life’s adversity.  Following the service, William answered questions and shared his knowledge about near-death and shared death experiences.

"What Baby Boomer's Want: Evolving End of Life Care for Our Future"


On Tuesday, November 10th, The Shared Crossing Project and Hospice of Santa Barbara brought Dr. Karen Wyatt, Palliative Care physician and author of "What Really Matters: 7 Lessons for Living from the Stories of the Dying", to the Santa Barbara community.  This 3-hour interactive workshop explored the new demands Baby Boomers are making to ensure the best end-of-life experience possible-for themselves and their loved ones.

The Meaning Of Our Final Words by Lisa Smartt

On Monday, July 28, 2014 our community of friends met at an exciting event sponsored by The Shared Crossing Project and Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care. This free community gathering featured a presentation by Lisa Smartt on her groundbreaking Final Words Project.

Lisa is working with Dr. Raymond Moody to decipher the seemingly nonsensical verbal expressions or utterances oftentimes vocalized by the dying.  During her presentation, The Meaning of Our Final Words, Lisa shared how her research is revealing that a symbolic language may exist in these verbal expressions…one that prepares the dying for their transition into what lies beyond this human life.
