What Are Shared Crossings?

Picture
A spectrum of loving connection at the end of life

A shared crossing refers to experiences that convey information pertaining to an impending death and/or to the perceived continuation of consciousness after bodily death. This information often provides comfort and support for the dying as well as for loved ones and caregivers throughout and after the dying process. Experiencers often report that they have received a gift or transmission crafted specifically for them

The Shared Crossing Project’s “Spectrum of End-of-Life Experiences” (SELE) presents a comprehensive list of the types of end-of-life experiences reported by dying persons, caregivers, and loved ones. Originally created by William Peters in 2014, SELE has been the subject of on-going study conducted by the Shared Crossing Research Initiative. Definitions for each type of end-of-life experience are presented below:

Descriptions and Examples of End-of-Life Experiences / Shared Crossings:
Click here for case examples of these experiences.

Pre-Death Premonitions: strong feelings that either oneself or another is about to die.  These premonitions typically appear days to hours before a death.

Pre-Death Visions and Visitations: seeing or sensing the presence of deceased loves ones or other beings that appear to offer comfort and support to a dying person.  These visions and visitations and visitations many occur hours, days, weeks, or even months before a death.

Pre-Death Synchronicities: events wherein seemingly random and unrelated events or coincidences are viewed as messages related to or signaling an impending death.  Pre-death synchronicities may occur hours, days, or weeks before a death.

Terminal Lucidity: the demonstration of an unexpected and unexplainable surge of vitality at end of life that may manifest as dramatic improvements in mental clarity, physical functioning, and/or human and spiritual relatedness.

At-Death Synchronicities: events in which seemingly random events occurring at the moment of death are understood as messages from the deceased or from some higher power.

Shared Death Experiences (SDE): experiences that people describe as sharing in the transition of the dying to a benevolent afterlife. SDEs typically occur right around the time of death, but some are reported to occur moments, hours, days, or even weeks before or after a death.

Direct Post-Death Communications: experiences in which people feel that they are in direct mental contact with a recently departed loved one.  Such experiences may occur immediately or shortly after a death, and they may continue for days, weeks, or even months.

Post-Death Synchronicities: experiences in which seemingly random and unrelated events or coincidences are understood to be signs or messages from the deceased.  Post-death synchronicities may appear shortly after a death, and they may continue for days, weeks, months, or even years.

Post-Death Visions and Visitations:  seeing or sensing a deceased person.  These visions and visitations may occur shortly after a death or may occur days, weeks, or even months following a death.

The Shared Crossing Project was founded to raise awareness and educate people
about the profound and healing experiences available to the dying and their loved ones.
